Church of Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Novaya Basmannaya Street

A stone church consecrated in honor of the apostles Peter and Paul was built in Kapitanskaya (Novo-Basmannaya) settlement, which was formed during the reign of Peter I and was inhabited by officers of regular army regiments.  Peter liked Novaya Basmannaya Street, which is a continuation of Myasnitskaya Street, because it led to the German settlement, to the stations of guard regiments and to the royal residences on the Yauza River.

The construction of a stone church dedicated to St. Peter and Paul began on the site of the old wooden one in 1705. The church was built by order of Peter I and even “according to a drawing made by the hand of His Majesty Himself”. The Peter and Paul altar was consecrated in 1708. In 1714, the work was suspended as the construction of stone buildings outside of St. Petersburg had been prohibited, but it was resumed by a special permit in 1717 - 1723.

A distinctive feature of the architectural type of this Church is that the bell level was located immediately above the main temple room. However, in 1744, the bells were moved to a newly built bell tower and the top part of the temple was made simpler. The multi-level bell tower featuring lush shapes of Elizabethan Baroque was connected to the Church by an open footpath. In 1855 - 1856, a covered connecting passage leading to the bell tower was set up.

From the east, the church grounds are fenced with an elegant forged railing. It was made in the middle of the 18th century for the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Bolshaya Spasskaya Street. The church was demolished in the Soviet era, and the railing was moved to the Peter and Paul Church in 1966.

In 1922, the temple was given to the Renovated Church. In 1934, it was closed and the building was used to house various institutions.

In the 1960s, the building underwent restoration, which involved the recreation of the original top part with a Dutch style spire.  In 1992, the Church was given to the eparchy and renovated. It was consecrated in 1994.
